Mary and Dan Nelson

At one of our model portfolio development sessions the talk turned to weddings.  Peggy Sue asked me if I shot weddings  as well.  I told her I did and she told me her sister, Mary, was getting married in July and would I be interested in shooting it.  I said I would and told her to have Mary get in touch and we’d sit down and figure out how I could help them.  Next, Brittany tells us she’s getting married in 2008 and she wants me to shoot their wedding as well.  TWO weddings in one day!

Mary and Dan are a very cute couple and we met, discussed and arranged to do the wedding shoot on their date…July 28th.  They wanted an engagement shoot, which in my opinion everyone should do.  It’s just good sense to get used to having a camera poked at you from all directions and develops a relationship between the couple and their photographer.  It allows tensions to ease and expressions to be more natural.  We did the engagement session at the family farm west of town, a great place to take a walk and shoot pictures. Soon enough they were standing in the sanctuary of their church exchanging vows.  What a great day!  Mary’s parents are laid back, really FUN people, and of course Peggy Sue looked ‘not photogenic’, as usual.  One of the things I’ve come to realize about weddings is that they are about beginnings and endings.  Beginning a new life with your chosen mate, and in Mary’s case, ending her role as a parental responsibility.  Those bonds are strong.  This picture shows the poignancy of that moment:

More than anything, what makes this picture what it is, is the look passing between mother and daughter as she places the veil over Mary’s face.  Never-mind the fact that two minutes before this shot they were giggling so hard I had to plead with them to stop so I could shoot this picture!
